The Egg Drop

The older students had a project this week that required them to problem solve within these parameters:
  • Build a container to protect an egg when dropped 8'
  • It can't be larger than 10" x 10"
  • Draw and name your design
So Friday was the "drop" date.  The students were all excited about showing off their designs. Many had tested out the designs at home with siblings with spectacles results. So now was time to do it together.
The group made a chart to record the results for 3 tries and the time of descent.  Although many used a box in some way, none of them had used the same materials inside of the box.  It's interesting to see how many different ways that they came up with to do this.
The younger students were the cheering audience which just added to the excitement.
Now usually there is a few causalities but we didn't have any until the last drop.  Very odd - but amazing!  The student was so upset when it happened but I think part of it was she was embarrassed.  The students usually aren't happy when an egg cracks but they know that was always a possibilty.
The younger students wanted to know if they would have a chance to make one too!  I know when a lesson hits a chord when others want to do it!
